For the 9” x 9” column, we need a minimum of 4 nos of 12mm rod is required with a 6mm or 8mm ring of spacing 5’ to 6” column required for residential buildings.
No of rods in column are calculated by various factors. It is necessary to consult a structural engineer before proceeding a building.
The structural drawing is necessary to proceed with the construction process. Before starting the structural drawing, we need a floor plan. After the floor plan is finalized, elevation design is required. Structural engineers will analyze the drawing a suggest an RCC Structure.
A Structural drawing has the following drawings,
Footing Drawing
Column line drawing
Plinth beam drawing
Roof Beam drawing

Column required for residential buildings?
For residential building, we regularly use
- 9” x 9” column
- 1′ x 9” column
The depth of the column is usually a 9” beam because the size of the brickwork is 9”. So, it will get aligned with the brickwork.
In the 9” x 9” column, 4 nos of 12mm rod is required.
For 1′ x 9” column, 6 no’s of 12mm rod is required.
This is just a guideline alone. This is the minimum quantity required.
To know the exact quantity, we have to calculate the following,
- Dead load of the structure
- Live load
- Wind load
- Seismic load
- Bending moment.
If the span between the column is more, we have put big beams. When the span is more, depth of the beam will be more.
For the beam, minimum 9” depth is required up to 10’ span.
For the roof slab, a minimum of 4.5” is required. If the span is more, the depth of the roof slab should also be more.
